My cruise boat was slipping along the coast of Antarctica’s Orne Harbor on a dark and bitterly cold March morning.
I had been on the deck with my camera for nearly an hour fruitlessly looking for interesting compositions while my wife and the other passengers were enjoying a warm breakfast and hot beverages in the toasty dining room.
Now, I’m a pretty dedicated photographer (okay, my wife would say ‘obsessive photographer’) but I must confess that I was having second thoughts when my fingers and toes started tingling and going numb.
I forgot all about those silly digits when a shaft of light snuck through the overcast sky and transformed the dull morning into this sparkling scene.
What particularly amazed me was how the sunshine created iridescent blue highlights on this little iceberg next to us. I got those cold fingers working and did my best to capture the moment.
In less time than it takes to drink your morning coffee, the clouds had shifted and everything again slipped into a shaded world of muted monochromes.
But those few minutes were truly magical.
Cheers!
Jeff
